OpenAI has rolled out GPT-5.4 mini and GPT-5.4 nano, pushing its GPT-5.4 family further down the cost and latency curve for developers building coding copilots, subagents, screenshot-driven automation, and other high-volume systems. Mini is the broader product play: it is live in the API, Codex, and ChatGPT, while nano is reserved for API users that need the smallest and cheapest GPT-5.4-class option for classification, extraction, ranking, and lightweight coding support. OpenAI is framing both as production models for workflows where response time shapes the product, not just a trimmed-down companion to its flagship stack.

The benchmark spread shows why OpenAI is pushing this launch hard. The company says GPT-5.4 mini runs more than 2x faster than GPT-5 mini and closes much of the gap with full GPT-5.4 on coding and agent tasks, posting 54.4% on SWE-Bench Pro versus 45.7% for GPT-5 mini, and 72.1% on OSWorld-Verified versus 42.0% for GPT-5 mini. Nano sits lower in the stack, but still edges past GPT-5 mini on SWE-Bench Pro and Toolathlon while keeping the same 400,000-token context window and 128,000-token max output as mini. Both models take text and image inputs, support structured outputs and function calls, and are designed for systems that split planning and execution across multiple agents.

Pricing is where the release gets sharper. GPT-5.4 mini is priced at $0.75 per million input tokens and $4.50 per million output tokens, while GPT-5.4 nano lands at $0.20 and $1.25. In Codex, mini consumes 30% of the GPT-5.4 quota, letting OpenAI push cheaper subagents into codebase search, file review, and other narrower jobs. In ChatGPT, mini is available to Free and Go users through the Thinking entry in the plus menu, while higher-tier users mainly see it as a fallback for GPT-5.4 Thinking. Microsoft also moved immediately to make both models available in Foundry, with Data Zone US live now and Data Zone EU listed as coming soon.

The launch also clarifies OpenAI’s platform strategy. GPT-5.4 is now the company’s default model for serious reasoning, coding, and agentic workloads, replacing GPT-5.2 in the API and GPT-5.3-Codex inside Codex. Mini and nano extend that structure rather than dilute it: the flagship plans, the smaller models execute, and the stack stretches across ChatGPT, Codex, the API, and partner clouds. OpenAI is also leaning on early customer feedback to support the case. Hebbia said GPT-5.4 mini matched or beat competing models on several output tasks and citation recall at lower cost, while Microsoft is pitching the pair as the low-latency layer for production agents that need to retrieve, route, and act in near real time.

1. Improved handling of complex coding tasks.

2. A new system for generating ‘thinking tokens’ that enable the model to plan and reason through problems.

Mistral AI is in the process of rolling out a redesigned Agents feature directly within Le Chat, replacing the earlier, more limited Agent Builder interface that was part of Le Platforme. This new implementation integrates closely with the main chat experience, allowing users to create and customize autonomous agents using a more intuitive and robust setup. It mirrors OpenAI's GPT Builder in many aspects but also introduces unique design choices and system integrations that differentiate it in terms of speed and access.

The feature is accessible via a new Agents tab in Le Chat, where users can either build new agents or explore a collection of existing ones. Each Agent can be configured with basic fields such as name, description, and behavior instructions. More advanced controls include guardrails—negative prompts that help steer outputs away from unwanted behaviors, and predefined or custom tone settings. These tools help fine-tune how each Agent responds to input.

Where the update becomes especially impactful is in the expanded access to tools and services. Agents can be granted permissions to use web search, canvas drawing, image generation, and code execution features, as well as integrations with Gmail and Google Calendar. Mistral also supports Libraries, modular logic components that can be plugged into Agents, making the setup extensible for more advanced workflows. Sharing within organizations is supported, and despite the depth of features, the Agents tool is expected to be accessible on the free tier, potentially making it one of the most capable offerings available to non-paying users.

The motivation behind this update aligns with Mistral AI’s broader push to differentiate itself through performance, especially latency. Compared to OpenAI’s GPTs or Google’s Gems, responses via Mistral Agents are generally faster, which may appeal to developers or power users managing more interactive applications. This feature is currently rolling out progressively and is expected to reach all users by the end of the week.

Google Cloud has announced the public beta launch of Gen AI Toolbox for Databases, an open-source server developed in collaboration with LangChain. This new tool is designed to help developers seamlessly integrate production-grade, agent-based generative AI applications with databases while ensuring secure access, scalability, and observability.

Developing AI-powered applications that interact with databases comes with challenges such as complex configurations, security risks, and limited workflow visibility. Gen AI Toolbox for Databases addresses these issues by simplifying database connections for AI applications. It supports databases such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, AlloyDB, Spanner, and Cloud SQL, ensuring secure and efficient querying.

The Toolbox consists of two key components:

• A server that defines tools for applications.

• A client that integrates these tools into orchestration frameworks, enabling centralized deployment and updates.

By managing tool execution and database interactions, the Toolbox improves performance, security, and developer experience, making AI-driven applications easier to build and maintain. Moreover, the Toolbox integrates with OpenTelemetry, allowing developers to track AI-driven workflows and database queries in real time, improving monitoring and debugging.

One of the key highlights of the launch is its compatibility with LangChain, a framework for building LLM applications. The integration enables developers to construct agent-based AI applications that can call tools in a structured and reliable manner. LangGraph, an extension of LangChain, further enhances this capability by managing stateful multi-actor workflows and improving coordination between AI models and external tools.

Harrison Chase, CEO of LangChain, emphasized the impact of this collaboration, stating:

The integration of Gen AI Toolbox for Databases with the LangChain ecosystem is a boon for all developers. In particular, the tight integration between Toolbox and LangGraph will allow developers to build more reliable agents than ever before.

The launch has already sparked discussions among industry experts. Vim Wickramasinghe, a co-founder & CTO at Visuo, noted:

Nice, but it could have been more useful if it had been built as an MCP server.

Addressing this point, Andrew Brook, an engineering director at Google Cloud, clarified the distinction:

Toolbox is focused on implementing and managing database-connected tools, while MCP defines a standard protocol for tool access. These are closely related, of course, but not quite the same thing. We're actively discussing some options for compatibility—if you have specific suggestions or requests, please consider opening an issue.

The project is now open for public beta testing, with source code and documentation available on GitHub.

ElevenLabs, a startup developing AI-powered tools to create and edit synthetic voices, is making its Reader app available across the world with support for 32 languages.

The app, first released in June in the U.S., the U.K. and Canada, lets users upload any text content — like articles, PDF documents or e-books — and listen to it in different languages and voices. Reader now supports languages including Portuguese, Spanish, French, Hindi, German, Japanese, Arabic, Korean, Italian, Tamil and Swedish.

ElevenLabs, which became a unicorn earlier this year after raising $80 million from investors, including Andreessen Horowitz, provides an API that companies can use for various use cases like dubbing or text-to-speech. The company powers voice interactions on the Rabbit r1, as well as text-to-speech features on AI-powered search engine Perplexity and audio platforms Pocket FM and Kuku FM. The Reader app is its first consumer-facing product.

ElevenLabs now offers its Reader app globally.

• Supports 32 languages including Spanish, Hindi, and Japanese.

• Initially released in the U.S., U.K., and Canada, the app allows users to listen to texts in various languages and voices.

• Powered by the new Turbo v2.5 model, the app boasts improved text-to-speech quality and reduced latency.

• The app competes with Speechify, which offers additional features like document scanning and voice cloning.

• Future updates to include offline support and sharing of audio snippets.

The startup said it has added hundreds of new voices from its library that are suited for different languages. Last month, the company licensed the voices of actors such as Judy Garland, James Dean, Burt Reynolds and Sir Laurence Olivier for the app.

ElevenLabs said the extended language support is powered by its Turbo v2.5 model, released last month, which purportedly reduces the latency of text-to-speech conversion and improves quality.

The Reader app’s closest rival is Speechify, which offers additional features like scanning documents for text, integrations with Gmail and Canvas, as well as letting users clone their own voice to read out text. Mozilla-owned Pocket and The New York Times’ Audm-based audio app also let users listen to content.

ElevenLabs said it would add more features to the app, such as offline support and the ability to share audio snippets.

X, formerly known as Twitter, has automatically activated a setting that allows the company to train its Grok AI on users’ posts. X enabled the new setting by default. The good news is that you can switch it off and also delete your conversation history with the AI. 

How to switch off X’s data sharing settings:

1. Open up the Settings page on X on your desktop.

2. Select the “Privacy and safety” button.

3. Select “Grok.”

4. Uncheck the box.

Perplexity is currently conducting trials to incorporate affiliate links on their Discover pages. On select pages within the main Discover feed, product links can now be found at the conclusion of articles. For example, a specific article showcases widgets featuring buttons for swift checkout, enabling users to choose the quantity of items and make a purchase by clicking the Buy button. Following these widgets, users can access reviews and a compilation of pros and cons.

Furthermore, users have the option to explore different variations of these products and consider alternative items from a designated list. Upon clicking the Buy button, users are redirected to a separate page featuring a checkout form. This experiment conducted by Perplexity is intriguing. It holds the potential to allow content creators to include affiliate links in their posts as a means to monetize their content in the future. Nevertheless, the widespread availability or broader implementation of this feature remains uncertain.

Previously, Perplexity was working on integrating Shopify into their search functionality. This current feature or test is a significant step towards monetization. It has been known that Perplexity aims to monetize, either by following the Google model with ads or by adopting a different approach. This is likely an early experiment, and it will be interesting to see how users react. Opinions can be controversial, and some people may view affiliate links as ads and dislike them.

Perplexity is not pioneering the inclusion of advertisements in their outputs among AI companies. An example of this can be seen with Bing Copilot, which has long been presenting in-line ads, generating considerable excitement among its user community. The unfolding progression of this scenario presents an intriguing area of observation.
